Data Dojo @ MicroStrategy's World.Now

REGISTER NOW...for free!  Hard Yards will present “A Hands-On Approach to Data Literacy” at MicroStrategy’s World. Now Public Sector Analytics Summit on Thursday, February 4 at 1:30 PM - 2:15 PM EST.  Jim Kockler will discuss how the Hard Yards Data Dojo can provide your organization a pathway to data literacy.  The dojo, defined as “place of the way,” provides teams with an immersive learning environment to deliver on current work and acquire long-standing skills.  At the end of the dojo experience, your team will transition from intuition-based decision making to data-driven decision making.

We designed the Data Dojo primarily for product and program managers as well as other stakeholders interested in data analysis and data visualization.  Instructors will incorporate interactive exercises for the cohort’s 10-12 participants. The Data Dojo instructors will divide the cohort into smaller teams based on individuals’ data analysis experience. This team-based approach maximizes participation by enabling more participants to contribute to completing the  exercises.   During the final two days of the course, the teams will use business intelligence (BI) software to complete a capstone data visualization exercise.  Organizational leadership will be encouraged to attend the capstone exercise out-brief.

Hard Yards delivers the educational content from Mural, a virtual whiteboard tool.  If your organization does not already use a BI tool, we will create temporary accounts for the cohort on a cloud-based instance of MicroStrategy.  Most importantly, Hard Yards will ensure access to the organizational dataset the cohort will analyze during the dojo.  As a proof of concept, Hard Yards will use the BI tool to create a set of basic data visualizations with the organizational data before executing the dojo.

Hard Yards will conduct discovery interviews with key organizational stakeholders to determine the type of data to analyze during the dojo. We developed a data taxonomy model with the three data facets of people, process, and product. The data sources and selected metrics will vary not only by the data facets but also by the organization’s strategic, operational, or tactical levels. The discovery interviews are the first step in a human-centered design approach to data analysis across the enterprise. For the dojo, we will focus on developing metrics to inform decisions or drive actions.

The Data Dojo emphasizes “learning by doing” and leverages the client’s data to showcase commercial best practices.  Each day of the Data Dojo has a specific theme: (1) Business understanding; (2) Data understanding; (3) Data preparation; (4) Modeling; and (5) Capstone presentation.  An example schedule is below.  Contact Hard Yards now for additional information!
